D Day 60th Anniversary

D Day 60th Anniversary

In June 2004 I travelled with a bus load of D Day veterans to visit Normandy for the D Day 60th Anniversary. It was a very special trip, a mixture of respect for the veterans and overall a very thought provoking trip.

Secret Bunker. An innocent looking farmhouse conceals the entrance to Scotland’s best kept secret. Scotland’s Secret Underground Nuclear Command Centre, near St Andrews. From it’s top secret Command Centre to dormitories, broadcasting studio and CND Room and learn how the elite survived the Cold War. 100ft underground is RAF Troywood, an “R3” style ROTOR bunker built by the RAF in 1953 in response to the threat of Nuclear War with the USSR.

Lest We Forget

Lest We Forget

Lest We Forget. Remembrance Day (also known as Poppy Day owing to the tradition of wearing a remembrance poppy) is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth member states since the end of the First World War in 1919 to honour armed forces members who have died in the line of duty. The day is also marked by war remembrances in several other non-Commonwealth countries. In most countries, Remembrance Day is observed on 11 November to recall the end of First World War hostilities.

Wartime Orkney

Wartime Orkney

Wartime Orkney Part 1. Churchill Barriers, the Italian Chapel, relics from the German High Seas Fleet and HMS Tern. Orkney’s wartime history is characterised by tales of bravery, camaraderie, tragedy and indomitable human spirit. The islands played a pivotal role in both World Wars and poignant reminders of these turbulent periods are etched across our landscape in the shape of the gun emplacements, searchlight stations and concrete bunkers that can still be seen today.

We got mittens too

IMG 2716

We got mittens too. During WW1, sometimes the German trenches and British trenches were so close together that they could shout to each other. Private Wilf Readman of the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers and his friends heard the Germans shouting “Gott mit uns!” (God with us). Wilf and his friends put their gloves on the end of their rifles, waving them over the top of their trench shouting back, “We’ve got mittens too!”
